About the Collection

A short tour of Macintosh startup chimes, from the original Mac to the Quadra and Power Macintosh, plus the Macintosh II crash sound. Click a track to listen in the retro player.

A startup chime was both reassurance and identity: it accompanied the moment a familiar computer began coming to life. Across the machines represented here, the sound helps distinguish generations that are otherwise often remembered through their cases and screens.

The crash cue changes the meaning of that ritual. Placed beside the successful startup recordings, it shows how sound could communicate a problem as well as a welcome. These clips preserve the computer's own signals, rather than the music of an application running on it.

Things You Probably Forgot

  • This collection keeps a small selection of recognizable sounds rather than every file from the original archive.

The Story

  • 1984 Apple introduces the original Macintosh on January 24. Its startup sound becomes part of the ritual of switching on the compact computer.
  • 1991 The Macintosh Quadra 700 arrives in October. Its startup chime is part of the shift from the compact Macintosh era to more powerful desktop machines.
  • 1994 Power Macintosh brings the Mac into the PowerPC era. The startup and crash recordings preserve the different ways these machines announced a successful start or a problem during startup.
