About the Collection
The message ping, contact-online alert, new-mail chime, and impatient nudge that bring back evenings on MSN Messenger. Click a track to listen in the retro player.
The alerts gave the buddy list a presence outside its own window. A contact appearing or a message arriving could become audible while someone was browsing or working, making conversation part of the background of a desktop session. Recognizing a cue meant knowing what to look for next.
Listening to the clips separately brings out their practical role. These were short signals designed to be noticed repeatedly, but their association with particular people and routines gave them a meaning far beyond the event they announced.
Things You Probably Forgot
- This collection keeps a small selection of recognizable sounds rather than every file from the original archive.
The Story
- 1999 Microsoft launches MSN Messenger Service in July. The desktop contact list makes it easy to see who is online and start a conversation without sending an email.
- 1999 Early Messenger versions use separate cues for messages, contacts coming online, and new email. The brief pings turn a background application into something that can interrupt homework or another conversation.
- 2005 MSN Messenger 7 introduces nudges: a more insistent way to demand attention, combining a sound with a shaking conversation window. The nudge becomes one of the service’s most recognizable interactions.
