About the Collection
Two regional Sega Saturn startup recordings: the NTSC and PAL versions of the console’s opening sound. Click a track to listen in the retro player.
The paired recordings make the opening itself the subject of attention. A startup usually passes quickly while a player waits for a game, but comparing the labeled regional versions encourages listening to the console's presentation as a separate piece of design.
They also belong to the CD-console ritual: switch on, watch the system introduce itself, then move into the disc's world. That repeated transition helps explain why a short recording can recall a whole generation of gaming without including music from a particular title.
Things You Probably Forgot
- This collection keeps a small selection of recognizable sounds rather than every file from the original archive.
The Story
- 1994 Sega Saturn launches in Japan on November 22. The CD-based console gives Sega a new platform and a new opening sequence at the start of each session.
- 1994 The startup is part of the console’s identity before any game takes over. This collection pairs the recordings labeled NTSC and PAL so their regional differences can be heard directly.
- 2018 Both regional boot recordings are preserved in the Computer and Console Boot Sounds Compilation, keeping an easily overlooked piece of console history together.
