What Was It?

The GameCube was Nintendo's purple box with a handle on the back. Released in Japan in September 2001 and in North America that November, it was the company's first console to use discs, small 8 cm ones that fitted its compact shape.

It competed with the PlayStation 2 and Xbox and sold fewer units than either, but its controller and its games earned a lasting following: Super Smash Bros. Melee, The Wind Waker, Metroid Prime and Animal Crossing among them. Accessories like the WaveBird wireless controller and the Game Boy Player kept it inventive.

Nintendo discontinued the GameCube in 2007 after the Wii, which could play its games, had launched.
