What Was It?

Windows 7 fixed what people disliked about Vista while keeping what worked. Released in October 2009, it introduced the redesigned taskbar with pinned programs, Aero Snap for dragging windows to the side of the screen, and fewer interruptions from security prompts.

It sold more than 630 million copies before Windows 8 arrived, and when Windows 8 replaced the Start menu with a full-screen tiled interface, many people decided to stay on Windows 7 for as long as they could.

Microsoft ended support on January 14, 2020. Paid security updates continued for some businesses until 2023.
