What Was It?

Windows Vista arrived in January 2007 after five years of development under the codename Longhorn. It brought the glassy Aero look, a searchable Start menu, desktop gadgets and much stronger security, launched with the slogan "The Wow starts now".

It is also remembered for what went wrong: high hardware demands, driver problems and User Account Control prompts that interrupted ordinary tasks. Many people stayed on Windows XP, and many who bought Vista PCs were relieved when Windows 7 arrived in 2009.

Microsoft ended support for Vista on April 11, 2017.
