About the Collection
You've got mail. Welcome. Goodbye. Revisit six familiar AOL sounds, from its spoken greetings to buddy and instant-message alerts. Click a track to hear it in the retro player.
AOL's spoken cues made actions feel like arrivals and departures. The welcome announced that a session had begun, the mail alert interrupted it with something personal, and the goodbye gave signing off a clear ending. These were short interface messages that could be recognized from across a room.
The buddy and message alerts tell the other half of that story. Email and live conversation shared the same online routine, so the computer's voice was also a signal that another person might be waiting.
Things You Probably Forgot
- Elwood Edwards recorded the famous AOL greetings at home in 1989.
- This collection keeps just six recognizable clips rather than every notification and novelty sound.
The Story
- 1989 Elwood Edwards records the AOL greetings at home. The spoken welcome, mail notification, and goodbye give the online service a human voice.
- 1998 The film You’ve Got Mail borrows the familiar phrase for its title, showing how strongly an email alert has entered popular culture.
- 2025 AOL ends its dial-up service. The greetings and chat alerts remain audible reminders of signing in, checking a buddy list, and waiting for a new message.
