About the Collection
The PlayStation Portable startup cue, from the era of UMD discs, pocket-sized movies, and games taken away from the television. Click a track to listen in the retro player.
The startup cue helped carry PlayStation identity into a portable setting. It marked the beginning of a session on a device that might be used on a journey, away from the familiar television and room associated with a home console.
Because the PSP also handled media beyond games, the opening could precede several different kinds of use. The recording preserves that shared starting point: the brief moment when the handheld announced itself before the user settled into a particular title or activity.
Things You Probably Forgot
- This collection keeps a small selection of recognizable sounds rather than every file from the original archive.
The Story
- 2004 Sony launches PlayStation Portable in Japan. Its startup sequence gives the handheld a recognizable PlayStation identity in a smaller form.
- 2005 PSP reaches North America and Europe. Games, music, and video share the same portable device, making its opening cue a familiar part of journeys as well as time at home.
- 2018 The startup recording is preserved alongside other console boot sounds. A few seconds bring back the ritual of switching on the handheld before choosing a game or movie.
