What Was It?
Prancercise is a fitness method created by Joanna Rohrback: a springy, rhythmic way of moving forward inspired by the gait of a horse. She came up with it around 1989, after she found herself nearly dancing during a morning power walk, and chose the name to evoke the strength and beauty of a horse.
Rohrback developed the routine in Hollywood Beach, Florida, where she regularly worked out on the Boardwalk. She self-published a book about it in December 2012 and uploaded her workout video to YouTube on Christmas Day that year.
In spring 2013 the video went viral and drew international attention. Rohrback went on to appear on The Today Show and Dr. Oz, in John Mayer's "Paper Doll" music video and in an episode of Glee.
