What Was It?
"Roller Babies" is a 2009 advert for Evian mineral water, made by the Paris agency BETC for the brand's "Live Young" campaign and directed by Michael Gracey. Computer-generated babies skate and breakdance to "Rapper's Delight", under the line "Let's observe the effects of Evian on your body."
It followed BETC's 1998 "Waterbabies" campaign and arrived when Evian was struggling, with recession, environmental worries and cheaper rivals eating into sales. Within three days of its launch in France and Belgium, television news was giving the brand free airtime.
Online it went much further. Guinness World Records listed it as the most viewed online advert of its time, and BETC returned for Evian in 2013 with a new global campaign, "Baby and me".
