What Was It?

"Numa Numa Dance" shows Gary Brolsma at his desk with a webcam, lip-syncing and dancing in his chair to "Dragostea din tei", a Romanian-language pop song by O-Zone, with complete and joyful commitment.

He uploaded it to Newgrounds on December 6, 2004, under the name Gman250. It spread across the web before YouTube existed and became one of the most important viral videos of the decade, inspiring countless parodies and, later, many people to start making videos themselves.

The chorus, "nu mă, nu mă", gave the meme its name, and the sight of someone dancing alone in front of a webcam became a template for the internet that followed.
