What Was It?

Trogdor the Burninator was born in Strong Bad Email No. 58, "dragon", on Homestar Runner, the Flash cartoon site made by brothers Mike and Matt Chapman. Asked to draw a dragon, Strong Bad gives a drawing lesson in the style of Ed Emberley's books and comes up with a fire-breathing serpent with stick-figure feet and a single, huge, muscular arm.

He finishes with a heavy metal theme song, and Trogdor's fiery destruction got its own word, "burnination". The dragon became so popular that his merchandise was consistently the best seller in the site's store.

An extended version of the song appeared on the 2003 album Strong Bad Sings, and "Trogdor" later turned up as a bonus song in Guitar Hero II. He also got his own arcade-style browser game and, in 2018, a board game that raised more than $1.4 million on Kickstarter.
