What Was It?

Salad Fingers is a British web series by animator David Firth about a thin, green creature with lettuce-like hands who wanders a bleak, empty landscape. Firth also voices him, and the voice is soft because he did not want to wake his parents while recording.

The first episode, "Spoons", went up on Newgrounds on July 1, 2004. In it, Salad Fingers explains how touching rust excites him and shows his particular love of spoons. It was unpopular at first, then took off once Newgrounds featured it on its front page. The Guardian later described it as one of the first animations to go "fully viral".

Firth made it in Flash, with music credited to artists such as Boards of Canada. He has said the series was never mapped out and was not meant to have a hidden meaning, though fans have built numerous theories.
