What Was It?

"Badgers", better known as "Badger Badger Badger", is a Flash animation by British animator Jonti Picking, known as Weebl. Twelve cartoon badgers do exercises in a field, a mushroom appears, and occasionally a snake, all to a relentless chant that names whatever is on screen.

It went live on the website B3ta on September 2, 2003, and looped forever in its original Flash version, which is why it played on so many school and office computers long after anyone meant to leave it on.

It was one of the great Flash-era hits, made for a web of portals, forwarded links and very short attention spans.

Things You Probably Forgot

  • "Mushroom, mushroom!"
  • "A snake! A snake! Oh, it's a snake!"
  • Leaving it looping in another browser tab
  • Sending it to everyone you knew

The Story

  • 2003 Weebl published "Badgers" on B3ta on September 2.
  • 2020 Adobe ended Flash, taking the original looping version with it.

Its Legacy

Flash is gone, but the animation survives on YouTube and in the memory of anyone who left it running too long. It remains one of the defining Flash cartoons of the 2000s.
