What Was It?
Bad Day is a 27-second clip, shot like surveillance footage, in which an office worker loses patience with his computer. He slaps the monitor, pounds the keyboard, then swings the keyboard like a bat to knock the monitor off the desk and finally kicks it out of his cubicle, while a neighbour peers over the partition.
It was staged. Loronix Information Systems of Durango, Colorado, made it in 1996 to show off its digital video surveillance system on a promotional CD, with the company's shipping manager, Vinny Licciardi, as the angry worker.
The clip was circulating online by 1997, mostly by email, where its small size made it easy to pass on. Many people took it for real. CNN revealed its origin in 1998, and it became the embodiment of computer rage.
