What Was It?
Tunak Tunak Tun is a 1998 bhangra and Indi-pop song by the Punjabi singer Daler Mehndi. Critics had claimed his music was popular only because of the beautiful women dancing in his videos, so he made one that featured nobody but himself. It was the first Indian music video made with bluescreen technology.
Four Mehndis, each representing one of the classical elements, arrive as comets, then sing and dance in front of computer-generated deserts, mountains and St. Basil's Cathedral before merging into one figure dressed in gold and emerald.
The song was the biggest Indi-pop hit of its time. Online, the first parody appeared in 2000, and once YouTube launched in 2005 the parodies took off again and the video became a global meme. Blizzard even added the dance to World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade.
