About the Collection
The atmospheric PlayStation 2 startup, recalling memory cards, DVD cases, and the moment before a game begins. Click a track to listen in the retro player.
The boot sequence introduced a console before the disc's own world took over. Its brief atmosphere made waiting part of the presentation, so the opening became associated with the anticipation of choosing a game and watching it begin.
Hearing the recording by itself separates the hardware's identity from any one title. That is why a few seconds can recall many different play sessions at once: the same opening sat in front of a whole library rather than belonging to a single game.
Things You Probably Forgot
- This collection keeps a small selection of recognizable sounds rather than every file from the original archive.
The Story
- 2000 PlayStation 2 launches in Japan in March, followed by North America and Europe later that year. Its startup sequence sets the mood before the game itself appears.
- 2000 DVD playback and compatibility with original PlayStation games make the console part of a wider living-room routine. The same opening sound can precede very different kinds of entertainment.
- 2018 A preserved boot recording captures that opening moment without a game soundtrack over it: a short return to the console menu and the anticipation of a disc loading.
