What Was It?

PlayStation Home was a social world for PlayStation 3 users. Avatars, personal spaces, public plazas, and themed activities made the console feel like a place to spend time even before launching a game.

Home offered a reason to remain in a shared console space between games. An avatar and a personal area gave the visit continuity, while public places and themed activities made browsing the world an activity of its own. The PS3 could function as a social destination as well as a game machine.

The official shutdown closed those common spaces. Remembering Home includes the experience of simply spending time there, where the arrangement of places and the presence of other avatars mattered even without a conventional objective to finish.

Things You Probably Forgot

  • Membership was tied to a PlayStation Network account.
  • Users could decorate personal spaces and visit public areas.
