Picnik made photo editing playful in a browser, with text, effects, collages, and sparkle.
A browser-based editor lowered the barrier to making a quick visual change. Someone could approach a photo as a small project without first becoming comfortable with a professional desktop editing suite. The convenience was part of the creative invitation.
Picnik belongs to a period when more everyday image work moved into the browser. Its closure ended a particular friendly workspace, even though simple online editing continued elsewhere and many of the same kinds of adjustments remained possible through other tools.
