What Was It?

Picasa brought local photo folders, basic edits, and easy sharing together before every camera lived in a phone.

Organizing photographs was part of the work of keeping a personal archive. Picasa gave that work a recognizable home, bringing browsing and everyday adjustments close together so a growing folder of pictures could feel more manageable. The interface became associated with revisiting as well as editing images.

Its retirement matters differently from the loss of a purely public social site. Photos can remain in local storage while the familiar way of finding, arranging, and working with them disappears, leaving a gap in the routine around the collection.
