What Was It?

Jaiku was an early microblogging service built around presence, status updates, and ambient social signals.

Presence was more than a binary online indicator. A short update could tell other people what someone was doing and give a group a low-effort way to stay aware of one another. Reading those small signals made the service feel closer to ongoing company than a collection of formal posts.

Jaiku belongs to the experimental period when the shape of microblogging was still open. Its remembered value is in that lightweight social rhythm: brief contributions building a sense of connection without requiring a full conversation every time.
