What Was It?
Yahoo Messenger mixed chat rooms, webcam calls, audibles, and one of the most aggressive attention buttons ever shipped.
The messenger mixed practical communication with conspicuous personality. A conversation could include visual and audible flourishes, making the client feel more expressive than a simple stream of text. The attention button in particular turned a request for a reply into an event on someone else's screen.
Different versions changed that experience over time, so the end of the legacy client and the later closure of the final service represent separate losses. The strongest memories often belong to the particular desktop version used by a group of friends.
