What Was It?

"All your base are belong to us" comes from the opening scene of Zero Wing, a shooting game whose 1991 European Mega Drive release contained some memorably broken English translation.

By the early 2000s an animated GIF of the opening text was spreading across web forums, followed by a techno music video that photoshopped the phrase onto signs, billboards and photographs around the world. In 2001 it was everywhere.

It became a template for a whole style of internet humour, and lines like "somebody set up us the bomb" and "you have no chance to survive make your time" are still quoted by people who never played the game.
