What Was It?
Nyan Cat is a pixel-art cat with a Pop-Tart for a body, flying through space and leaving a rainbow behind it. Chris Torres posted the animated GIF on April 2, 2011, based on his own cat, Marty.
Three days later, YouTube user saraj00n paired it with a Japanese song made with a synthesised voice and uploaded it as "Nyan Cat". It was one of the most-viewed videos of 2011 and spawned endless remixes, games and ten-hour versions.
In 2021 Torres sold a remastered version as an NFT for around half a million dollars, giving one of the internet's silliest images a very strange afterlife.
