What Was It?
LOLcats are photos of cats captioned in a deliberately broken language called lolspeak, usually in bold white Impact lettering. Cat pictures had been passed around for years, but in January 2007 the blog I Can Has Cheezburger? turned them into a phenomenon.
Characters like Ceiling Cat and phrases like "I can has cheezburger?" and "I'm in ur base" spread far beyond the forums they started in, onto mugs, calendars, books and even a crowd-written translation of the Bible.
LOLcats set the format for the image macro meme, and cats have dominated the internet ever since.
