What Was It?

lonelygirl15 looked like the video diary of Bree, a homeschooled 16-year-old talking to her webcam about her day, her best friend Daniel and her purple monkey puppet, P-Monkey. Her first vlog, "First Blog / Dorkiness Prevails", went up on June 16, 2006, made for $130 with a Logitech webcam.

Bree was a character, played by actress Jessica Lee Rose and created by Miles Beckett, Mesh Flinders and Greg and Amanda Goodfried. Viewers grew suspicious, and fans on the show's forum used a fake MySpace profile to trace Bree's internet address to Creative Artists Agency. The creators confirmed the series was scripted on September 7, 2006, calling it "the birth of a new art form."

The channel had already become the most subscribed on YouTube, and viewership tripled after the reveal. The story ran until August 1, 2008.

Its Legacy

The first vlog is still on the channel where it began. Bree is often called YouTube's first viral star, and the hoax made viewers question whether any video blog was real.
