What Was It?

Trololo is the internet's name for a 1976 clip of the Soviet baritone Eduard Khil singing "I Am Very Glad, As I Am Finally Returning Back Home", a song by Arkady Ostrovsky, as a wordless vocalise. The name imitates the way Khil vocalises through the whole song.

The clip was uploaded to YouTube in 2009. From February 2010 it spread through sites such as trololololololololololo.com, and a segment on The Colbert Report on March 3, 2010 made it famous. It became known as the Russian Rickroll, and the song became tied to internet trolling.

Khil, long a star in the Soviet Union, enjoyed a late wave of fame and adopted the stage name Mr. Trololo. He explained that the song once had lyrics about a cowboy riding the prairie, which could not be published at the time, so it became a vocalise instead.
