What Was It?
Overly Attached Girlfriend began as "JB Fanvideo", Laina Morris's entry in a 2012 Justin Bieber contest that asked fans to turn his song "Boyfriend" into a "Girlfriend" parody. Morris, from Denton, Texas, decided to make hers creepy. Staring into the camera with a fixed smile, she sang lines like "If I was your girlfriend, I'd never let you leave without a small recording device taped under your sleeve."
She posted it on June 6, 2012. A Facebook friend shared a screenshot of her stare on Reddit, and by the next morning it was a meme. The still became an image macro, captioned with jealous and clingy jokes, and spread across social media.
Morris leaned into the character with more parodies, including "Call Me Maybe", and appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. As she told NPR, "Yeah, it's me, but it's not really me."
