What Was It?
Annoying Orange began as a short video by Dane Boedigheimer, known online as DaneBoe. In a kitchen full of food with human faces, a talking orange pesters an apple with jokes, puns, noises and a signature laugh, until the apple meets a sudden end under a chef's knife.
Boedigheimer had made talking food videos before and first planned to call it The Annoying Apple, but an orange turned out to be easier to animate. The first episodes went up on the Dane Boe channel from October 2009, and a dedicated Annoying Orange channel followed in January 2010.
What was meant to be a one-off became a full series and a franchise, with toys, games, Halloween costumes and a Cartoon Network show. Critics often found it as irritating as its name promised, but by 2011 it ranked among the most subscribed channels on YouTube.
