RuneScape began on January 4, 2001 as a free Java game that ran in a web browser, which meant it ran on school and library computers that could never have installed a big online game. Players chopped trees, fished, fought, traded and talked in a medieval world built by Andrew Gower and his brother Paul.
When RuneScape 2 arrived in 2004, the original version became known as RuneScape Classic and was kept running for a dwindling group of veterans, with access periodically restricted and reopened.
Jagex announced in May 2018 that Classic would close because of accumulated bugs and its incompatibility with modern tools, and the servers were switched off on August 6, 2018.
