Delicious, written del.icio.us in its early days, turned bookmarks from a private browser menu into something social. Save a link, add a few tags, and you could see what thousands of other people had saved under the same words.
Founded by Joshua Schachter and Peter Gadjokov in 2003, it became a symbol of the Web 2.0 era and was acquired by Yahoo! in 2005. By 2008 it claimed more than five million users and 180 million bookmarked URLs, and its popular page was a daily guide to what the web was reading.
Yahoo! sold it in 2011, and Delicious passed through several owners before Pinboard acquired it in 2017 and discontinued the service, leaving its archive read-only.
