What Was It?

StumbleUpon made the web feel infinite: press a button, land somewhere unexpected, repeat for hours.

The button removed the need to know what to search for. A visit could begin with curiosity rather than a question, and an unexpected page could send someone into a subject they had not planned to explore. Discovery became a repeatable action.

That made the wider web feel central to the experience. The destination was often somewhere else, so the service functioned as a way of traveling between sites rather than keeping every activity inside one feed. Its loss is remembered as a change in the feeling of browsing itself.
