What Was It?

GeoCities gave the early web blinking GIFs, guestbooks, fan shrines, and fiercely personal home pages.

A personal homepage could be a collection of interests rather than a polished public identity. Guestbooks invited visitors to leave a trace, while images, backgrounds, and handmade layouts made even a small page feel owned by its creator. Discovering another person's corner of the web was part of the pleasure.

GeoCities is therefore remembered for variety as much as for its recognizable visual excess. The loss of hosted pages affected fan projects, hobbies, and personal histories that had accumulated over time. Surviving copies preserve fragments of that culture, though they cannot restore every link or interaction.
