Meebo Messenger let people sign into several instant-messaging networks from a website. It was useful on shared computers where installing a separate client was inconvenient or impossible.
A browser-based messenger offered a different starting point from installing several desktop clients. The attraction was a shared place to reach conversations, especially when the computer in use was not necessarily the user's own carefully configured machine. The browser became the meeting point.
Meebo Messenger should also be distinguished from other Meebo-branded products. Its closure marks the end of that messaging experience, rather than implying that every service or piece of technology associated with the company stopped on the same day.
