What Was It?
In 2007 the Portland TV station KGW was broadcasting live from the Waterfront Village at the city's Rose Festival when reporter Nancy Francis turned to a 10-year-old named Jonathon Ware, fresh from the face-painting booth as a zombie. "Jonathon just got an awesome face paint job," she said. "What do you think?" He replied, "I like turtles."
The 17-second clip was posted online and spread within hours. It inspired remixes, T-shirts and ringtones, and NPR noted that it became one of the biggest ringtones in the UK. He had just seen a turtle exhibit, and the question caught him off guard.
In 2023 Jonathon recreated the moment, zombie face paint and all, in a promo for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.
