What Was It?

Firebug was the Firefox extension that made inspecting and debugging web pages approachable. Editing styles while watching a page change helped turn the browser into a practical development workspace.

The important shift was the feedback loop. A developer could inspect a page, change a style, and immediately see what that change did in the browser. Layout problems became something to investigate in place instead of guessing at entirely from the source files.

Firebug's retirement is also a story of an influential tool becoming less separate from its environment. Browser development tools took on the work that once made the extension special, while the habit of experimenting directly on a live page remained central to web development.

Things You Probably Forgot

  • Its tools brought page inspection and JavaScript debugging together.
  • Live CSS editing let developers experiment without repeatedly changing source files.
