About the Collection
The unmistakable message alert, chat request, and online notification from the era of ICQ numbers and desktop instant messaging. Click a track to listen in the retro player.
The message alert was useful precisely because the chat window did not have to be visible. A short cue could pull attention away from another task and turn the next moment into a conversation. Other notifications distinguished a new message from a contact becoming available or requesting a chat.
Together, the clips preserve that background social presence. They are small pieces of interface audio, but their meaning came from the expectation that someone else was on the other side of the sound.
Things You Probably Forgot
- This collection keeps a small selection of recognizable sounds rather than every file from the original archive.
The Story
- 1996 Mirabilis launches ICQ, an early desktop instant messenger. Users find one another through numeric identities and see when contacts are available.
- 1998 AOL acquires Mirabilis as ICQ grows. Its short message alert helps make incoming conversation recognizable even when the chat window is not in view.
- 2024 ICQ closes after nearly three decades. The familiar uh-oh message sound remains one of the most immediate reminders of its early desktop years.
