Google Code Project Hosting gave open-source projects a place for repositories, bug reports, and documentation. Its plain project pages became familiar stops when downloading tools or searching for a fix.
The plain project page was useful because it concentrated the essentials: a way to obtain the software, a place to report trouble, and information about how the project worked. For smaller tools, that page could be the closest thing to an official home.
The distinction between active hosting and an archive matters here. A preserved download or repository can remain useful after the working service closes, but it does not replace the ability to file a new issue or participate in development in the same place.
Things You Probably Forgot
- Project pages combined code, issues, and wikis.
- Google offered migration tools when it announced the closure.
