What Was It?
"Friday" is the debut single of Rebecca Black, a teen pop song about her morning routine and her excitement for the weekend. It was written and produced by Clarence Jey and Patrice Wilson of ARK Music Factory, and Wilson appears near the end with a short rap. The video follows a typical Friday, from school to a ride in a convertible with friends.
It went online on February 10, 2011 and had a small audience until a tweet by comedian Michael J. Nelson and a Tosh.0 blog post drew attention to it on March 11. Within weeks it was everywhere, from late-night TV to a Glee cover, and it topped YouTube's list of the most-watched videos of 2011. Much of the attention was unkind.
Black said the hurtful comments shocked her, but she refused an offer to take the video down, saying she did not want to "give the haters the satisfaction".
