What Was It?
Chuck Testa is a taxidermist who owns Ojai Valley Taxidermy in California. His commercial claims his work is so lifelike that people will think the animals are still alive. People react to what look like live animals in odd situations, such as an antelope driving a car, until Testa appears to explain that it is just him.
The ad was made by the comedy duo Rhett & Link for their IFC show Rhett & Link: Commercial Kings, which premiered in June 2011 and made eye-catching commercials for local businesses. It was posted on YouTube that summer.
"Nope, Chuck Testa" became a catchphrase on Reddit and Tumblr, the craze drew coverage from outlets such as CBS, and Time's Nick Carbone ranked it among the best memes of 2011. Testa later appeared on Rhett & Link's Good Mythical Morning.
